Nisheeth Rawat
AFG 2590
I don’t think I had spoken to Nisheeth Rawat during college
days.
And out of the blue in early 2003, while I was in my room at
Ganga Ram hospital, Delhi, I found Rawat looking for me. He introduced me to
his sister who was having her antenatal checkups done at my hospital. Over tea
he told me about his experiences at Johns Hopkins and how he was working with
HIV patients in Delhi at an NGO. He was very passionate about his work and
would tell me about his cases. After that at monthly intervals, he would always
come and have a chat with me during the hospital visits. He also went to AIIMS
and met DJ (who was doing his retina fellowship there) and was in touch with
Anita Jayaswal in the same NGO. He was always full of stories about his
patients and how he was trying to alleviate their misery.
And as suddenly as he appeared, his visits stopped abruptly.
There was no contact for almost 3-4 months (those were the pre-mobile days).
In Jan 2004, his sister came to my room with her baby. She
sat down and burst out crying. And slowly she informed me that her bhaiya was
no more. His kidneys had shut down, he was admitted to AIIMS in early Jan 2004 but couldn’t make it.
Strange are the ways of the world. The whole episode seems
so surreal and I can still visualise him animatedly telling his stories.
May his soul rest in peace.
