A ROLLING STONE DOES GATHER SOME MOSS
After
passing out somehow from the halls of the hostel, I served in the fauj for five
years, mainly in J&K and a short stint in Delhi. The experiences gained
were gold for the future as it prepared me to take tough decisions in any
circumstances. Met my partner Mandira and got married against the headwinds,
during the field tenure itself. After the army tenure, I prepared and went to
the US for a brief but eventful couple of years in Psychiatry at a prestigious
University in New York but soon got saturated with the subject and crowd, to
move onto UK for my MBA. After turning down a Ph.D offer, I came back to India
to work as a Healthcare entrepreneur and have had a series of start-up
experiences so far. Along my journey we were also blessed with two beautiful
children, a boy Swrang and a girl Vidyuti. Swrang is a LLM (Environment Law) and Vidyuti is now a Masters in economics, going on to do her PhD.
The
best days I spent after coming back to India were in Bangalore, with my family
and designing corporate hospitals like Max, Narayana Hrudalaya, etc. Work
brought me to Delhi where I setup India’s first health communications
consultancy for a global firm and in about five years, I
set up my own consultancy, THOT Consultants (www.thotconsultants.com). We have been working mainly on
Health related advocacy and communications issues for the pharma, NGO, UN and
Governments, with an ever increasing focus on Public Policy.
My
uphill journey in healthcare advocacy, communications & education in India
over the last 16 years or so has been very fruitful yet only partially
fulfilled. Governments changing from left to right of center have impacted our
sector (possibly adversely) but the need to educate our masses, especially on
matters of health access, policy and quality remains a huge gap. I dream of
taking the learnings in a distilled, demystified manner to the masses across
India and globally, to truly empower and effect change from 'bottom up'. This I
see as a critical gap in a world obsessed by technology & academic laurels
for the most part, and some of our healthcare/medical peers maybe guilty of the
same.
My
wife has been a partner at work as well and while my son is currently pursuing
Law with a focus on intellectual property, our daughter is studying hard to
become a doctor and later a policy expert. I spend my time these days
whatsapping with batch mates and being an ‘entrepreneurship mentor’ to
developing organizations.
