Life in college
Had fun, combined with serious learning. What I learnt
during college comes handy even today when it comes to the basics of medicine.
I often remember how intense the academic discussions with Shyam, Inji, KK and
Jasmina and so many others used to be- every detail had to be worked out
logically!! And whatever I understood well, I put down on paper in the form of
notes and did not even realise that they would become so popular as to become
my Defining feature! It was indeed a
pleasant surprise for me to find two of those notes wala registers of 1984
vintage on my Wardens desk in 2004! I love to reminisce our days participating
in various Hobbies competitions where Damby and I would make some exotic
designs with Rangoli powders and walk away with prizes, much to the chagrin of
those painting beautiful traditional patterns. Or those election days, with all
the hustle bustle, and our task to paint posters or organise theme parties. The
Diners Club parties at Chung Fa and the Crossword sessions with Neeta at the
canteen! I loved being the Class Rep and painstakingly preparing the weekly
training programmes. (Gave me an additional chance to visit the Girls Hostel to
drop a copy of the programme!??)
Life after college
A very busy year of internship at BHDC followed by a stint
in the valley, including a few months at Siachen. Absolutely fantastic, where I
tried all those things that I had remained unscarred from during days on
college. (Delayed adolescence, I suppose). Then, PG at Pune, less academic and
more romantic days, that culminated in clinical tutorship on one hand and
marriage to Nonika on the other. Then, moved to Delhi, Bareilly and then
Panagarh. I would have remained a basic gynecologist had Nonika and the little
boys not pressed me hard to find a way out of that desolate place (though,
personally, I was comfortable there!) With no My baap in the services, I
thought of applying for study leave as a way to help my family get out of there
discomfort. And got it! Game changer. Got plum postings afterwards. And have
enjoyed life in the Army so far!
Future plans- uncertainty rules. Would like to work in a
resource constrained setting and provide quality healthcare there.
Lessons in life-
You can't lose weight, unless you are thrown into some God
forsaken corner of Ethiopia or Somalia for good!!
